History: Calvin Rankin from a young age knew poverty. Growing up in Detroit with little money was more then difficult. Being an only child left him to his own devices and often resulted in him stirring up trouble. His father was always away working and his mother was often working to earn what little she could. They wanted to give Calvin everything but neglected him in the process.
By the time he was 12, he was a smart sly kid who had horrible grades. He had been
suspended multiple times and dragged home by the police on more then one occasion. Then everything changed.
Right before his 14th birthday his house was victim to a string of breaking and entering in the neighborhood. His father seeing that the would-be robbers had no weapons decided to confront them while they ransacked their home. Unfortunately the criminals were mutants. They easily murdered his father and went after his hysterical mother. Calvin had seen enough. With his unknown mutant power developing his hand turned to liquid metal. In rage he shaped his arm into a sharp blade and plunged it into the heart of the murderer. The other robber panicked.
He sent enough voltage through his body to burn him and Calvin’s mother.
With the loss of his parents and no known relatives he became an orphan. He became stoic and refused to talk about his parents from that point on. The orphanage tried many different types of therapy but all seemed lost. That was until one such therapist discovered he was a mutant. Calvin didn’t deny it and the therapist knowing of the Xavier Institute thought it was best he become a student there.
Calvin was still reluctant to speak but over time he began to open up at the school. He realized that a lot of mutants had tragic pasts, he wasn’t the only one. He began to develop his unique powers. It was very difficult. While one mutant had to learn to control their power he had to master a new one each time he copied someone’s abilities.
Upon earning his high school diploma at the Institute he decided to leave. He believed Xavier’s school was his home but he wanted to attend college and become more social. He was accepted into Boston University and majored in history during his time there.
Years passed without incident. Calvin was very happy and grateful to live a normal life which many mutants never got. That was until his last year. For months he felt like he was being followed. Familiar faces seemed to be in the background all the time and he became suspicious of his friends. One day he was seemingly attacked out of the blue. Using his reserved powers he escaped capture and fled the campus.
His suspicions had turned out to be right. Someone wanted his unique powers. Even at half the strength possessing the gifts of mutants like Jean Grey or Havok made him potentially a very powerful tool. He spent the next 6 months traveling.
Eventually he returned to the Xavier Institute after being unable to completely rid himself of whoever wanted his powers. He felt his was safest at his home with true friends he knew he could trust.
Sample RP:
Calvin sighed and shook his head. This day had not gone well and it was not even noon. So far his alarm clock hadn’t gone off on time, all water had stopped half way through his shower and it felt like his clothes had shrunk in the wash.
He pulled on his t-shirt once more trying to get it to resemble its original size once more. “Hey, watch it.” He scolded as a few of the younger students ran out of the kitchen. He hadn’t been paying attention to what was in front of him but that didn’t mean they had to run into him.
“What’s the big rush...?” He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw why the students didn’t want to stick around. The place was a complete mess. Dishes with half eaten meals were strewn across the counters, boxes of cereal were half open and it looked like something was stuck in the toaster. “Wonderful.” He muttered to himself.
